Improv in Arizona & Ticket Giveaway!
(Scroll to the bottom of this post for the Rafflecopter contest to enter if you want to skip to the sweet stuff!)
Just the other day, I got a newsletter from NCT (National Comedy Theater) Phoenix, and it got me thinking: I am totally new to local improv. I’ve never ever seen a show in person before.
So I responded to the email (as this blog is pushing me to try new experiences) and Dorian Lenz, the Director of NCT Phoenix, was kind enough to let me share their summer programming and offered me FOUR pairs of passes to give away to you all! How cool is that?!
The thought of an interactive show with talented performers just naturally wingin’ it.. without a script..! How do you prepare for that? (I’m so used to having a plan, even if that plan goes horribly wrong.) My friend laughed when I asked him what to expect, and he gave me some sage advice:
You don’t know what to expect, that’s kind of the point. 🙂

So read on, get some quick tips from local improv vets, see what NCT Phoenix is offering, and then enter to score a pair of passes to see a normal Friday or Saturday night show!
What should you expect?
I spoke with Facebook pal Erica Connell, who let me know that not only was she a veteran performer, but she got her start at one of NCT Phoenix’s Intro to Improv courses! I also spoke with Chris Campbell, a local actor.
Ana-Blog: How did you get into improv?
Erica: I was born a performer. I first got started with NCT by taking one of their improv classes. Then auditioned for the core group of performers.
Chris: My passion for improv was first sparked from the classic show Who’s Line is it Anyways. I started getting together with my friends and we’d just play improv games. Eventually I got into cosplay and my enjoyment for improv saw itself come out through the characters I cosplayed until I made an original character of my own and joined the Arizona Renaissance Festival. Now I’m practicing improv every single week at a local club and am doing shows in front of live audiences.
Ana-Blog: Any advice for first timers attending a live improv event?
Erica: As far as attending an even for the first time. Participate. Not just by laughing but providing suggestions and if they ask for audience volunteers. Then don’t over think the experience just be you!
Chris: Just be ready for anything. If you’re an audience member, you’re going to be asked for scenarios, locations, or characters for the performers to use for each game. Avoid obvious sex jokes and try to give the performers a hardball like something oddly specific or just plain whacky.
Ana-Blog: Do you have a favorite experience or anecdote from an event?
Erica: Everyone I’m in front of an audience is my favorite experience. It’s my drug of choice.
Chris: That’s really hard to say, actually! I have so many great moments as my Faire character, though one one of my favourite experiences in traditional stage improv so far has probably doing a lip sync battle with another performer on stage. I busted out White and Nerdy. The audience loved it.
